São Paulo International Film Festival awards new filmmakers, who have concluded their first or second feature, with the Bandeira Paulista trophy. In 2020, 88 films that form the New Directors Competition run for the prize.

From the total number of films in the section, the most voted by the audience are selected (this year, in a virtual way) at the end of the festival’s first week of screenings. Only the best rated features are presented to the Jury, which, in 2020, gather the professionals Cristina Amaral, Felipe Hirsch and Sara Silveira.

Held over two decades ago, the Competition has awarded filmmakers such as the Iranian Jafar Panahi (The White Balloon, 19th Mostra, 1995), the French Bruno Dumont (The Life of Jesus, 21st Mostra, 1997), the Danish Thomaz Vinterberg (The Celebration, 22nd Mostra, 1998), the Mexican Alejandro Gonzáles Iñarritu (Love’s a Bitch, 24th Mostra, 2000) and the Brazilian Marcelo Gomes (Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures, 29th Mostra, 2005).

Last year, the Jury granted the Bandeira Paulista trophy to three features: Best Documentary for Honeyland (North Macedonia), by Ljubomir Stefanov e Tamara Kotevska, and Best Fiction for Babyteeth (Australia), by Shannon Murphy, and for System Crasher (Germany), by Nora Fingscheidt.

Among the recently awarded films are ¡Las Sandinistas! (EUA), by Jenny Murray; Adriana’s Pact (Chile), by Lissette Orozco; El Amparo (Venezuela, Colombia), by Rober Calzadilla; Sparrows (Iceland, Denmark, Croatia), by Rúnar Rúnarsson; Inbetween Worlds (Germany), by Feo Aladag; Harmony Lessons (Kazakhstan, Germany, France), by Emir Baigazin; La Jaula de Oro (Mexico), by Diego Quemada-Díez; Fill the Void (Israel), by Rama Burshtein; Breathing (Austria), by Karl Markovics, and Plot for Peace (South Africa), by Carlos Agulló and Mandy Jacobson.
