On the 9th of August 1999, Gunnar Rehme travels to Munich. It is not the awaited solar eclipse that attracts him there, where multitudes form to witness the spectacle. In truth, he has to begin a six-month prison sentence for drunken driving. Before this, he takes advantage of the journey by visiting his children by his ex-wife, Petra, who are already adolescents. Petra and her husband, Reinhold, are leaving to watch a show in which Clarissa and Hermann are appearing together. Therefore, Gunnar has time to spare to talk with the children and to own up about his prison sentence. Even in prison, Gunnar remains optimistic. His grand plan is to stage a great New Year’s Eve party in Günderodde house, which he considers will symbolise a great change in the lives of all the people who participate. His main hope is that the authorities let him spend New Year at home, as a result of his good behaviour. . The plan to build a museum in Schabbach is abandoned after an earthquake shakes the city, destroying the paintings. Lulu, who was to direct the museum, decides to go to New York, to visit her old friend Roland, who now lives there.
