Born in Kassel, Germany, in 1972, he grew up in Zurich, Switzerland. He studied film and psychology and worked as a journalist, editor, cultural organizer, and musician. Before his debut as a director, he wrote several screenplays. He directed the short film "Herr Goldstein" (2005), winner of the Golden Leopard award at the Locarno Film Festival. The Mostra presented his features "The Friend" (2008) and "A Decent Man" (2015).
