Based on the text of "The Kiss on the Asphalt" (1961), a play written by Nelson Rodrigues and staged for the first time in 1961, the film narrates the story of Arandir, a man who, in a mundane gesture, fulfills the request for a kiss on the mouth made by a man about to die and who had just been run over on Presidente Vargas Avenue. The act is witnessed by Amado, a sensationalist reporter who begins to exploit the kiss between two men to sell newspapers, in addition to inciting the police to investigate a supposed connection between Arandir and the dead man. The work centers on the discussion about the power of conspiracy and the destruction in the life of a man until then anonymous. In the plot, Arandir is involved in accusations made by his father-in-law, Aprígio, who insists on the idea that he witnessed the kiss, when, in fact, he had his back turned, and by the doubt that the police and the reporter instill in his wife, Selminha`s mind.
