Erika Kohut, a woman of about forty, is a piano teacher at the Vienna Conservatory. She is being punished for expressing her innermost sexual desires. She finds a means of escape from the possessive domination of her mother with whom she lives, by going in secret to porn movie houses and peep shows. Her sexual satisfaction is limited to this type of voyeurism and to the sadomasochistic mutilations. One day, she meets Walter, a young student who is determined to seduce her. But this new love will bring her new anguishes and a self-destructive behavior.
Based on the book by Nobel winner Elfriede Jelinek, the film won the Grand Jury Prize and the Palms for best actress (Isabelle Huppert) and actor (Benoit Magimel).
