Under the Moonlight (2001)

Sobre o filme

Seyyed Hassan is undergoing a crisis of conscience. On the eve of becoming a “mullah” (an Islam religious authority), he begins to query his future. His reluctance is such that even the purchase of the clothes and of the turban necessary for the consecration ceremony are difficult. When he does purchase the clothes, he is robbed by a boy on his way back from the bazaar. The fact further aggravates his hesitation, but he goes off through the city in search of the boy and his clothes. His search, however, will lead him not only to find the small thief. On the outskirts of town, he meets different types of socially excluded types: a writer, a musician, a prostitute. His life will never again be as it was before. Together with these outcasts, Seyyed Hassan is to find his religious vocation. Under the Moonlight is a sensitive, courageous film, for it queries the function of the strongest institutions in the country: religion. This is not a religious film but a film full of spirituality.
