Led by veteran Apo, a group of monks is crossing the Himalaya mountains as a caravan to find Tashi, a devoted disciple who has been three years in solitary meditation. After emerging from the deepest trance, Tashi is taken back once more to the monastery to recuperate his strength. His return, however, is to lead to an unexpected outcome. Tashi meets Pema who awakens in him all of his sexual desire. Tashi knows a human being must live through all experiences in order to consciously relinquish them. The passing days, however, are to prove Tashi unprepared to cope with other aspects of day-to-day life such as jealous feelings towards a neighbor, or sexual attraction for a domestic servant in the house. He soon realizes that life can be a great deal more complicated than he might ever suppose.
