Patrick Bateman embodies the values of the eighties almost to perfection. The young New Yorker is most charming, in extremely good taste, with the best brand names, goes to trendy restaurants and discos, works out at the right academy. In high style, he earns his way in Wall Street taking every advantage of the financial boom of the decade. Nevertheless, things may not be quite what they seem and, below the surface appearance, Bateman is really a monster that does the rounds in New York at night cutting the throats of beggars and prostitutes. Evelyn, his bride-to-be, Courtney, the cleaning woman, and Jean, his beautiful secretary - all are unsuspecting. Even detective Donald Kimball is duped for some time by his seductive nature. Until Bateman comes face to face with someone more terrible than he is: his double, Paul Allen. In respect to Patrick Bateman?s personality, director Mary Harron says: "The obsessions of society become an exorbitant weight for him. Whereas most young people despise poor people, he kills them.
