A journey through Italian cinema in the fifties until 2004. The young filmmaker identifies five generations of directors. The documentary is based on four long chapters and an epilogue. I Figli del Miracolo Economico: Mario Monicelli and Dino Risi broach the particular nature of Italian comedy and the euphoria and disquiet of youth post-war; Furori e Utopie: I Giovani del 68: Mario Bellochio, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Paulo and Vittorio Taviani go back over a year of contestation and speak of the demystifying of bourgeois security and of the construction of a world project; Gli Anni dell?Ansia: Nanni Moretti presents the young people who grew up in the years of political disillusion; Anni 80/90: i Trentenni tra Fuga e Oblio: Gabriele Salvatores and Paolo Virzì broach the 1990s, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, with an end to the first republic and the crisis in ideology; and L?Ultima Generazione: Marco Tullio Giordana reflects on the world scenario today, taken as it is, by war. Interviews with directors, images from TV news programs, photographs, and film sequences make up this documentary.
