The Burnt Theatre (2005)

Sobre o filme

Cambodia is a land of dreams destroyed. In spite of the absence of theaters and shows, some of the actors hold out. The documentary depicts the particular case of the Preah Suramarith Theater, built in 1966, in a period of peace. The Khmer regime was to use it for their propaganda spectacles. The theater was restored by professionals in theater, music, and dance, but was gutted out by an outbreak of fire, in 1994. Since then, it has stood abandoned. Most astonishing, however, is that the theater premises are still alive, desperately so, with groups of actors who stayed on, ekeing out an austere existence, shared out between rehearsals and makeshift performances for the benefit of the tourists. At times, for food, they hunt for small bats in the attics of the theater and add these to their diet.
