Based on a novel of the same name by Alaa Al Aswani, a best-seller in Egypt, the film focuses on politics, corruption, sex, and torture. The Yacoubian is one of the oldest, most charming buildings in the center of Cairo. Routine for the residents synthesizes Egyptian society today. Zaki El Dessouki is a decadent playboy that nevertheless keeps up an appearance. His neighbor Bothayana, a poverty-stricken girl, must give in to harassment from her boss to support her family. Journalist Hatem uses his money to seduce a soldier. The most expensive film ever in the history of Egyptian cinema, The Yacoubian Building was the cause of much controversy in his country for scenes that are gay.
