Subsequent to the attacks of September 11, 2001, producer Alain Brigand asked 11 directors to make short films for na anthology. All of the filmmakers were given the artistic freedom to reflect on the attack, within a framework of 11 minutes, 9 seconds, and 1 photogram —or 11’09’’01. Danis Tanovic remembered July 11, 1995, and the Srebrnica massacre, and Loach, that Salvador Allende was deposed from the Chilean government on September 11, 1973. Idrissa Quedraogo made a reflexive comedy on Burkina Faso. Samira Makhmalbaf showed a teacher endeavoring to explain the attack to a group of children. Sean Penn evoked the life of a widow who lived in the shadow if the twin towers that fell. Claude Lelouch described the reactions of several deaf people to the event. Shonei Imamura resorted to the Japanese memories of World War II. Mira Nair showed problems with ethnic minorities. Amos Gitaï rendered his interpretation on the role of media in information of international significance. Alejandro González Iñárritu presented 11 minutes of prayers in darkness, and Youssef Chahine reflected on the prospects for the Middle East.
