Born in Morbach (Germany) in 1932. He graduated in Drama and Art History. From 1953 on, he made several institutional documentaries, beginning to make fiction films in 1967. He is one of the signatories of the Oberhausen Manifest in 1962, founding document of the New German Cinema. Co-founder of the Institut für Filmgestalltung in Ulm (along with Alexander Kluge) and director of the Institute until 1968. In 1965, he created his own production company in Munich. In the 70’s, he published several cinematographic theory essays, besides novels based on his own screenplays. In 1980, he started Heimat, the first series of 11 films about the German identity, concluded in 1984 and exhibited at the 10th Mostra. In 1992, he releases the second part, Heimat 2, with 12 films. Heimat 3, the third part, was exhibited at the Venice Film Festival.
