The script for Hamlet is one of the most popular by English playwright William Shakespeare. The plot involves intrigue, lust, and treason that are to lead to cruel assassinations. In the Kingdom of Denmark, the Prince is seized by a desire for revenge against his treacherous uncle. The Prince discovers that the uncle is responsible for the death of his father, having then married his mother and seized the throne. In this contemporary version, set in New York, Hamlet returns from the university for his mother?s wedding to his uncle. He sees his uncle at the head of Denmark Corporation that belonged to his father, and hate and revenge are to take up all of his hours. Director Michael Almereyda cites Orson Welles to define his film: "Welles filmed his version of Macbeth in 21 days and described the film as a gross draft of the play. I wanted to film Shakespeare in the same spirit, as crudely and with as much energy." Hamlet can be seen in more than 40 versions for cinema, the most famous being that of Lawrence Olivier, from 1948; that of Russian Grigori Kozintsev (1964); that of Tony Richardson (1969); and also that of Akira Kurosawa (1961).
