Lyonya is just a common youngster: with his friends, he likes to show off how he can dance with the girls and fight the other boys. He has a clear-cut vision of life. But, one day, the only factory in town closes down, and his life no longer makes any sense. He goes in search of work and soon finds good opportunities. Each of the jobs can provide him with a different future, enabling him to meet new friends, teachers and loves. But Lyonya rejects all of the jobs, although he is always dedicated and serious at work, anywhere. The only job he will accept is in a road mender?s brigade supervised by charming Mr Roslov. All would seem to be well: a new job, new friends, and a new love, for he falls in love with Khrysha. But strong disillusion awaits him: Roslov proves to be a petty thief that makes use of his work to swindle and to conduct illegal business. Lyonya tries to rebel against the chief and his criminal team, but Roslov and his brigade beat him up, almost to death. Summer ends and so does his love. There is no more summer, no love, no job. But, one day, a ship comes into port and Lyonya finds a job there, floating free and doing occasional business along the river?s edge.
