Favela Rising (2005)
Sobre o filme
A young resident from Vigário Geral, in Rio de Janeiro, Anderson Sá actually came close to a life of crime. However, he thought twice of taking up crime as a way of life when he came into contact with the workshops given by Afro-Reggae, became a vocalist for the band of the same name and one of the main spokesmen for the type of social intervention adopted by the group NGO - namely, by devising alternatives in social and cultural activities that can offer a counterpoint to the attraction offered by the apparent easy success in life for drug trafickers. Hip-hop and dance thus become arms for a community against both the violence of the drug traffic lords and the corrupt police. Within this framework, the Rio favela shanty towns are an area not only of poverty, but a venue for creativity, encounter, and resistance.
