This new documentary by Hubertus Siegert begins with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and, in a very personal way, runs through the transformations forthcoming from his desire to overcome the catastrophes of the past. This is a diary with commentary on the reconstruction of the city - a debate between the wish to deny the past and the prospect of a new beginning. The film shows images of this city, fascinated by the great transformations and that, over the course of last century, saw its urban texture destroyed, divided, rebuilt and once more unified. The capital of Germany is presented as the center of a drama that involves architects, urban planners, entrepreneurs, politicians, and laborers in general. They are not, however, the leading characters in the plot, but merely parts of the machinery that drives human nature. “The film portrays the agents of this radical reconstruction in authentic scenes edited within the vision of a documentarist. In place of interviews or statements, the film dwells on facial expressions, on body language, and on fragments of conversation to show these persons in their environment”, says the director. In addition to the images, another lead is in the sound track composed by the Einsturzende Neubaten group.
