The film portrays the scandals involving two women in the life of Brazilian Senator Américo Baldani in a series of events that spin his political career. His wife Valquíria accuses him of corruption and influence trafficking, while his mistress - the mother of his secret 16-year-old son, Luís Roberto – commits suicide. Both scandals hit the headlines throughout the country. Paulo Hermes, the senator’s aide and right arm, comes out in his defense and takes Luís by force to the South in an attempt to hide him away from the press and from the senator’s political opponents. Meanwhile, Serena, head nurse at a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro and with whom the senator also had an unfinished affair, is convinced by Paulo Hermes to seek a hideaway in the South. She is then taken to Cidreira, a small seaside town, where she discovers the existence of Luís Roberto, the senator’s son, who lay drugged and unconscious in a house. Reluctantly, Serena is persuaded by Hermes to look after the boy. In the remote house where she is staying with the senator’s son, Serena meets the housekeepers, Lobo and Penha, and the couple becomes another source of conflict. Without knowing Luís Roberto’s true identity, Lobo digs out information about him in order to obtain blackmail money. Little by little, Luís recovers and becomes very fond of Penha. This angers her husband. The tension reaches boiling point when Luís Roberto finds out that Serena had an affair with his father, for whom he nurses a deep hatred.
