“Black Books,” a name inspired by the notebooks of Carolina Maria de Jesus, tells the story of the homonymous literary series created in 1978 by writers in São Paulo within the Unified Black Movement (MNU). The series, which released its 45th volume in 2024, emerged at a crucial moment, when the Black population was seeking space and representation in various spheres of Brazilian society. Quilombhoje, the group behind the initiative, fosters debate on the erasure of Black people and their distorted representation in Brazilian literature. To this day, more than 300 Black authors have been published in Black Books.
