“Spring in the Teeth – The Story of Secos & Molhados” is a documentary series that delves into the meteoric rise of one of the most revolutionary groups in Brazilian music. Formed by actor Ney Matogrosso, architecture student Gerson Conrad, and Portuguese journalist João Ricardo, the band emerged during the darkest period of Brazil’s military dictatorship — as a true cultural and behavioral insurrection. More than portraying the group’s rapid ascent, the series contextualizes the historical and cultural moment, revealing the importance of avant-garde theater in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in the genesis of modern popular music.
In addition to archival footage, excerpts from the group’s performances, scenes from “O Rei da Vela”, and films by Rogério Sganzerla, the series features the emotional reunion of some of its members, 50 years after the band’s breakup. Among the guests are Ney Matogrosso, Gerson Conrad, Emilio Carrera, Willy Verdaguer, Paulo Mendonça, Moracy do Val, Cláudio Tovar, Roberto Frejat, João Marcello Bôscoli, Charles Gavin, Ana Cañas, Duda Brack, and Helena Ignez, among other essential figures in reconstructing this history.
